  Golegã

The history of Golegã is deeply linked to the Tagus and Almonda rivers, to the fertility of the Lezíria wetlands, with horses and bulls and to the diversions of kings and nobility.

Pure Traditions
The Pure-Bred Lusitano is the most ancient saddle horse in the World, having been ridden approximately 5000 years ago and was recognised by the Greeks and Romans as the best riding horse of the Classical Era. Portugal is the birth-place of this breed and Golegã is internationally recognised as the Capital of the Horse.

The Pure-Bred Lusitano is undoubtedly the horse for high level equestrian riding and bullfighting, but it is also surprisingly good at show-jumping, schooling and competition carriage racing.

The Hourse Fair
November is the most awaited month. Aside from the roasted chestnuts and the tasting of new wine, Martinmas is an extremely important date in Golegã due to a historic and traditional fair held in this town with its strong connections to the world of horses and bulls, and which is known today as the International Lusitano Horse Fair . This event attracts thousands of domestic and foreign visitors each year. The fair includes many equestrian events such as rallies, competitions, games, championships and demonstrations of horsemanship and dressage. Amongst other things, the fair is also the reason for a great many parties, auctions, horse-ball tournaments, equestrian school exhibitions, conferences about horses and competitions related to the Traditional Portuguese Equestrian Dress. It is a truly unmissible event.
